Do you wonder what each make up product is for, well wonder no more!
Primer is usually a silicone based liquid that is applied underneath foundation to give the skin a more flawless appearance and stop the foundation from slipping off the skin. It also acts as a barrier to oils and keeps the skin mattified.
Foundation is often referred to as a “base”, a foundation is usually applied across the whole of the face except the eyes and lips. Its purpose is to make the skin tone and texture appear more even. Foundations can be used to cover up blemishes and other imperfections, and some are formulated to give a more youthful appearance by reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Foundations are usually sold in the form of liquids, creams, powder or mousses. They can be applied with a sponge, a foundation brush, or with the fingers. Mineral makeup foundation, however, often comes formulated as a powder (either pressed or loose powder) and can be applied with a kabuki brush.
Concealer is mainly used to cover imperfections such as spots, dark circles and other small blemishes visible on the skin. Both concealer and foundation are typically used to make skin appear more uniform in colour. These two types of cosmetics are different in that concealers tend to be more heavily pigmented. Also, foundation is usually applied to larger areas than concealer is. They may come in liquid, semi-solid, powder, pencil, or felt-tip form. Finishes range from matte to a “light-diffusing” look intended primarily for under-eye use. Concealer may be used by itself, or in conjunction with foundation. I apply the concealer over the foundation.
Face powder is a powder applied to the face to set foundation after application. It can also be reapplied throughout the day to minimize shininess caused by oily skin. It can be translucent sheer powder, or pigmented powder. Certain types of pigmented facial powders are meant be worn alone with no base foundation. Powder tones the face and gives an even appearance. It comes packaged either as a compact or as loose powder. It can be applied with a sponge, brush, or powder puff. Even distribution over the face is achieved easier when a loose powder is applied.
Eye shadow is applied on the eyelids and under the eyebrows. It is commonly used to make the wearer’s eyes stand out or look more attractive. Eye shadow adds depth and dimension to the eyes, complements the eye color, or simply draws attention to the eyes. Eye shadow comes in many different colors and textures. It is usually made from a powder and mica, but can also be found in liquid, pencil, or mousse form. Typically application is done using sponges, fingers, and/or brushes. The most important aspect of applying eyeshadow and makeup in general, is blending well. An eyeshadow primer or base can be applied to prevent the shadow from fading or migrating to the crease. Many eyeshadow sets come with three or four colours, the lightest being the highlighter while the darkest is used in the crease. To apply, first lightly blend the base (medium) color all over the lid and then smudge the darker color from the lash line up to the crease. Once the two colors are thoroughly blended, sweep highlighter onto the brow bone and blend. Finish with eyeliner and mascara.
Eyeliner Depending on its texture can be softly smudged or clearly defined. There are four main formulas available on the market: each produces a different effect. Liquid eyeliner is an opaque liquid that usually comes in a small bottle and is applied with a tiny brush or felt applicator. It creates a sharp, precise line. Powder-based eye pencil is eyeliner in a wood pencil. It is generally available in dark matte shades. Wax-based eye pencils are softer pencils and contain waxes that ease application. They come in a wide variety of intense colours as well as paler shades such as white or beige. Wax-based eyeliners can also come in a cone or a compact with brush applicator. Kohl eyeliner is a soft powder available in dark matte shades. It most often used in black to outline the eyes. It comes in pencil, pressed powder, or loose powder form. Less commonly found is Gel eye liner, which is a softer gel liner that can be easily applied with an eyeliner brush. It can be precisely applied and is much softer than Kohl.
Mascara is used to darken, thicken and define eyelashes. It is available in many formulas, tints, and colours. The main purpose of mascara is to define, thicken, lengthen, and emphasise lashes. Mascara is available with tube and wand applicators. Ingredients in mascara include water, wax thickeners, film-formers, and preservatives. Mascara brushes can be straight or curved, to curl eye lashes, with fine or thick bristles.
Blusher, formally known as ‘rouge is typically used to redden the cheeks so as to provide a more youthful appearance, and to emphasise the cheekbones. Usually available in powder form it is applied with a brush to the cheek. A cream-based variant of blusher is also available.
Lip liner is intended to fill uneven areas on the outer edges of the lips before or after applying lipstick, therefore giving a defined shape. The product is usually sold in a retractable tube or pencil form.
Lipstick is known to have been used around 5000 years ago when semi-precious jewels were crushed and applied to the lips and occasionally around the eyes. Cleopatra had her lipstick made from crushed carmine beetles, which gave a deep red pigment, and ants for a base. Lipsticks with shimmering effects were initially made using a substance found in fish scales called pearlescence.
Lip gloss is used primarily to give lips a mildly glossy lustre and sometimes subtle color. It is available as a liquid or a soft solid. It can be completely clear, translucent, or various shades of colour including frosted, glittered, and metallic look.
