Looking Gorgeous in your Wedding Photographs

As a wedding photographer, it is my job to capture every special moment of your magical day and of course, ensure every Bride looks stunning in every photograph, even the fun ones.

So from my point of view, where would I recommend you start in planning how you are going to look on your wedding day?

Many brides book a make-up artist to do their wedding day ‘face’ and that is very sensible. Even if you are excellent at applying the most beautiful make-up, the morning of your wedding will probably be full of excitement and glasses of champagne, not always the best combination when a mascara wand is involved. It is your day to be spoilt and pampered, so go for it, find yourself a really good make up artist to pamper your face. A few tips here

  • ALWAYS have a trial run and don’t be afraid to tell your make-up artist if you don’t like what she is doing. There is no point wearing make up you hate on the day, any good MUA will listen to what you do and don’t want and advise accordingly. If you really can’t agree, or feel in anyway uncomfortable, move on and find someone else.
  • Don’t be too concerned if they apply your make up a little heavier than you would normally have it, it has to last all day and if your photographer uses some flash at some point in the day, it will help stop any ‘washing out’
  • Photographically, most of us girlies always look better taking a ‘less is more’ approach – the make up may be more heavily applied, but it should still look gorgeous and natural.
  • Book EARLY! Like good photographers, good make up artists get booked well in advance, especially for the popular summer and key winter dates. The more time you allow, the better chance you have of finding the right person for you

So if you wouldn’t normally wear make up, should you on your wedding day? There is no right or wrong answer to this, it is very much a personal choice, but I would offer the suggestion of speaking to a make up specialist and perhaps booking a trial, see how you look and feel before going ahead and making a booking for the day. A good MUA will never make you look overdone and silly, they will only enhance your preferred natural look, so why not give it a try, you can always decide against it if you really don’t like it.

Finally, if you are going to apply your own make up, remember what I said earlier about the morning of the wedding and allow yourself at least twice as long to apply it as you normally would. It may be worth investing in some make-up lessons just to be sure you are flattering yourself and of course, it’s an investment that last long after your big day is just a distant memory.

Your wedding day hair is another area where you can apply almost identical principals as above – but you really can go for glamour if you want, get a look you love and allow plenty of time for trials and test runs before making the final booking for your day. After that, the rest is up to your photographer, my job is to take these building blocks and complete the look with fabulous photographs.

My name is Yvonne White and I am a London/Hertfordshire Wedding Photographer though I do work across the South East and the UK on request. Wedding photography is about capturing your memories, making a visual record for you and your descendants to enjoy long after the cake is eaten and the dress is boxed up in the loft. Tell me a bit about yourself?

Hello, I’m Lucy – I am the Photographer/Director of ShotByLucy. We specialise in supplying product photography for online retailers nationwide. You can follow us on Twitter @ShotByLucy or visit our website at http://www.shotbylucy.co.uk/

What type of photography does your company specialise in?

We specialise in product photography. If you have a website and you sell online, then we want to hear from you. We are creative people and we like to show that through our work.

What inspired you to become a photographer and is this you re first job?

This is a tough one, I had always enjoyed taking photos even from being a child. But when it got to my A-Levels, I ended up taking a serious interest in Photography. Developing my own films and photo prints in a darkroom was brilliant. From there it developed and I went on to work for different companies throughout the UK gaining experience. I got fed up of working for other people knowing that I could do it myself and I always had the ambition to work for myself, I knew I could do it and had wanted to do it from around the age of 16 but something always got in the way. So last year I finally decided to take the plunge, I quit my full time job (as a photographer) and took the risk. It was very difficult to start with but now we supply photography to many businesses nationwide and have many happy customers.

Do you like to photograph people or objects?

Bit of both really! We specialise in product photography, so mainly objects really.

What tips would you give to someone looking for a photographer and what the most important question they should ask before booking?

When choosing a photographer there are a few things you need to be considering. Always check their work and request samples. You want to see what kind of work they do and if their style would suit your products. It’s always best that you choose a photographer that you can get along with, so shop around and chat with your potential happy snapper to make sure that they fully understand your requirements. Most importantly, be careful of hidden costs. Some companies can tend to charge ‘by the hour’, make sure payment details are stated before any work commences and ask for it in writing for your own peace of mind.

What in your make up bag?

A mixture of things including L Oreal mascara, Elizabeth Arden foundation, Clinique powder, a few Avon bits.. Pencil eyeliners, sparkly liquid eyeliners of all colours … I m serious, the list goes on!

What your skincare routine?

I’m not a typical girl, in fact I’m terrible. I have no regime, I wake up, wash my face, whack on some moisturiser and put my slap on. I am really bad for falling asleep without taking my makeup off and it used to make me laugh because my friends used to comment that after a night on the razzle dazzle, my face/make up looked perfect in the morning. No idea how!

What one beauty product couldn t you live without?

It has to be my Elizabeth Arden compact, its ace. Perfect to pop in your bag for those emergencies!

Who do you most admire for their style and beauty and why?

I’d have to say Cheryl Cole at the moment. She tends to look perfect all of the time… Maybe I should invest in a personal stylist? 🙂

Guest Blog – Lara Jade

The Guest Blog Today is all about Lara Jade

Tell me a bit about yourself?

I’m Lara Jade – a fashion, portrait and advertising photographer currently living in England. I’ve been shooting for six years now (since the age of fourteen!) and I am privileged enough to be able to travel internationally as well as working in my homeland in something I love!

What inspired you to become a photographer?

As a child I was ALWAYS inspired by everything around me – I took this vision into art, painting and drawing first. Then during my end of high school exams at school I discovered photography whilst researching artists. Immediately I fell in love and wanted to try it myself.

You travel all over the world to photograph people, where your favourite place?

At the moment NYC – I have been there three times this year. The last visit was for two months. Everything about it inspires me so much, I feel that my strongest body of editorial work came from there because every day I could go out and feel inspired by everything around me.

What tips would you give to someone who wants to be a photographer?

Practice makes perfect – don’t give up. You need to keep shooting to get a style, to improve, to learn. I am constantly working, for free or paid jobs to keep improving my style and knowledge.

What in your make up bag?

Rimmel, Max Factor, Boots own brand and a beautiful lipstick I bought from make up forever in NYC.

What your skincare routine?

As I’m always working, especially at night – I make sure my make up comes off (with make up wipes) first – sometimes this is the only thing I use if I’m in a rush. But usually I use toner to remove all make-up and follow up with a moisturiser before I go to sleep! I tend to use the SIMPLE range.

What one beauty product couldn t you live without?

My Rimmel black eyeliner

Who do you most admire for their style and beauty and why?

People that go out of their way to be original and to be noticed – I like unique fashion and style. People I admire – Rachel Zoe, Taylor Momsen, Mary Kate Olsen…
